The Consummation of Redemptive History
Having just celebrated Easter, our understanding of Christ’s victory is fresh in our minds. As He hung on the cross and proclaimed “it is finished”, we can absolutely trust that is was indeed finished. The work He came to complete – to pay our debt and restore us to the Father – was done, but the ultimate result of this work would not be realized immediately. He told His disciples to take His Word to the ends of the earth, and as His servants in this present age, we carry that same torch. There is, however, coming a day when that mission will be satisfied. And on that day, we will rejoice because it will also bring about the return of our Lord and Savior. He will descend from the clouds which He ascended through 2,000 years ago and He will gather those who belong to Him – and the kingdom of God which was already inaugurated in a spiritual sense, will then be fully realized. This entire process has garnered a great deal of attention and scholarship for two millennia, and a lot of prediction from every corner of Christendom, so we must be humble in our approach. We intend to understand that which our Lord has intended for us to understand – nothing more and nothing less.
