The Priesthood of Christ
In the roughly 350 years between the ark coming to rest in the mountains of Ararat to the time of God’s calling of Abram, there is no Biblical evidence of God’s direct interaction with His creation, and thus – among men – no true knowledge of their Creator. It is in this period where we can reasonably speculate that the false religions of antiquity grew – and with them, the need for priests who would intercede between the ordinary people and the gods. It is in this environment that Scripture introduces us to a mysterious man named Melchizedek, known as the king of Salem and priest of God Most High. Of all the priests who sought to intercede for man and appease the gods, Melchizedek seems to stand alone as the One who truly stood as the intercessor between Creator and creation. And it is in this priestly order – the order of Melchizedek – which the Epistle to Hebrews states Christ is called. We will be focusing this Sunday on Christ as our High Priest – what this means and why it is important.
